Don Woodard is an artist from Colorado who creates unique thee-dimensional paintings and mixed media artworks. Each piece is painted with oils, watercolor and stains, after hand-carving the images into select woods.

Clam Digging, oil and watercolor on relief carved Linden wood, 19¼ x 26 x 1¼ in.
Woodard’s artworks are inspired from adventures, wildlife, events, locations and people that he has personally experienced, seen or met traveling throughout the Rocky Mountains either by horseback, by foot, by motorcycle or by truck.
“Award-winning artist Don Woodard combines carving and color to produce visual art with Western and wildlife themes,” notes the Olaf Wieghorst Museum and Western Heritage Center, which has exhibited some of his work. “Like Olaf, Don’s art is influenced by events and situations experienced firsthand.”

Bighorn View, oil and watercolor on relief carved Linden wood, 20 x 26½ x 1¼ in.
Kim Krehbiel, a board member of the Vernon Filley Art Museum in Pratt, Kansas, states: “I have watched various artists present their works over the years, and I have never seen an art piece that was as breath taking as Bighorn View. It stood out to me for its unique make-up, but even more so because of the beauty, the realism, the three-dimensionality and the wonderful feeling I had looking at the artwork. I also felt blessed when I was able to purchase Bighorn View.”

Trail to the Top, mixed media, hand-carved Linden wood, leather reins on riding horse, textile lead rope on pack horse, oil and watercolor paints, 19½ x 24 x 1¼ in.
For Woodard’s newest work Clam Diggers, his collector was deeply moved by the work: “I looked, went hmm…then looked again, and again, and for five minutes I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. I suppose that’s what art is!”
Woodard shows his work at juried art shows, art museums and art centers throughout the country. He is currently booking his National Park Art Collection for shows in 2025 and 2026. —
